Macedonia has been without an official representative to NATO headquarters in Brussels since the country was admitted in March 2020, with NATO refusing to give security clearances to current Macedonian candidates.
Army general Zoran Sekulovski has not been able to get a NATO security clearance, with Ambassador Dane Taleski being the latest representative expecting to fill the role delayed by the Commission of foreign affairs in Macedonian Parliament.
The delay of Taleski’s approval by the Commission is being justified by VMRO accusing SDSM for de-legitimizing the institutions of the state by issuing security certificates to potential NATO representatives that are only acceptable to the current administration.
In a video address on January 19, member of the VMRO’s executive committee Dragan Kovachki stated that NATO refused to issue security certificates to two Macedonian representatives whom the Macedonian government had promoted as potential delegates.
Kovachki stated that Defense Minister Shekerinska regards her respective ministry as an extension of her party. Kovachki alleged that SDSM has issued a security clearance to a journalist closed to that party, enabling the person to access state secrets unabated.
